What is Executive Function Coaching?Executive function coaching is: the art and science of guiding learners to strengthen their own capacity to get things done.
-
Can’t I just be my child’s executive function coach? As a parent, you control many aspects of your student’s life – where they live, what they eat, their curfew, etc. This unequal power dynamic can make your student very sensitive to your feedback. By having an objective professional help them with the challenges of school, it can free up space to focus on building a healthy dynamic with your student.
-
Are your services in-person or online?I primarily serve students online. Upon request, I serve students in person in Orleans and Jefferson parishes. Some private schools in the area offer space for students to be served during the school day as well.

Do you accept insurance? No, I cannot accept insurance. You can access a superbill of all services I have provided by logging into your Client Portal. I do not work directly with insurance companies or provide codes regarding diagnosis or services. Some clients have used their Flexible Spending Account/Health Savings Account (FSA/HSA) benefits to help pay for coaching services. FSA/HSA providers have varying requirements or approval processes. I encourage clients to contact their FSA/HSA provider to see if services qualify as an approved use of those funds. If they qualify, the client can ask that High Potential Kids be added to the FSA/HSA provider’s approved vendor list. Some families have successfully used 529 Plan college funds to pay for coaching services. Please contact your 529 Plan provider to see if that can be an option for you. I can provide a statement for families that are getting reimbursed by school districts. This includes dates of services and payments received.

What is your cancellation policy?I ask for 48 hours’ notice for cancellation or rescheduling of appointments. The schedule is often full - when you cancel in advance, it lets someone else grab your spot. However - I'm a parent, too. Kids get sick and accidents happen. Sessions are paid in advance. If you have to cancel, and it's not something that happens every month, I'll issue a make up credit that can be used for a future session. These are tracked and spent in the TutorBird portal. No-shows are billed and do not receive a make-up credit. Cancellations and rescheduling must be done through the client portal, please.

How do you know what my child needs?Experience helps: I'm a certified gifted teacher and have worked with gifted kids for over 25 years. I've taught most grade levels, created curriculums, and developed school programs. Gifted kids are my favorite topic. I truly believe every one of them is unique. We talk about your hopes for services before we decide to work together - your child's strengths and any concerns you have. I'll ask questions to learn more and suggest ideas. Initial consultations typically last 30-45 minutes. There is no charge. If we decide to work together, we'll make a plan that meets your needs and goals.

How can gifted services make things better for my child while they're in school?Gifted kids often feel bored, frustrated, or unseen. They might wonder why they are at school at all. When we initially begin services, my job is to captivate them with something they can't wait to work on. This gives them a mental outlet for the intensity they've been feeling, and it immediately helps - like releasing pressure from a valve. Some kids can barely make it from gifted class to gifted class, and we meet twice a week at first. My next job is to gain their trust, and then we work on strategies and skills alongside our academic projects. I teach how to find purpose in time spent at school, and how to avoid boredom. Over time, the gifted child reframes their thinking about school and why they go. This makes them feel in charge: school isn't something that happens "to them" anymore, it's a place they go to get specific things. And there's peace in that.

Do we need a "gifted diagnosis" to work with you?No. Identification of the gifted is controversial and often biased. There is no single definition of giftedness, nor is there a single best way to identify gifted children. Offering a child the opportunity to try gifted enrichment is equitable and often reveals hidden talents and interests.
-
Where do you meet with people?I conduct meetings with adults and kids over Zoom and Google Meet. For families in Orleans and surrounding parishes, I offer in-person services at public libraries, counselor offices, and spots chosen by neighborhood groups. Some local private schools allow services to occur during the school day.

I suspect that my child is a gifted underachiever. Can you help with this?Underachievement in the gifted happens for many different reasons. I have resources that can help identify underachievement. Treatment often requires a team-based approach, and I am skilled at being a member of such teams.
